We welcome one of Asia's leading orchestras, the China Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, and its conductor Daye Lin to perform two of Respighi's lavishly orchestrated tone poems, including the Pines of Rome, heard in this video. Also on the programme, two masterworks for orchestra and violin by Chausson and Saint-Saëns performed by the acclaimed violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen as well as the UK's first live orchestral performances since its release of film score excerpts by leading Chinese/American composer Tan Dun from the Academy Award-winning hit movie 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', which blends Chinese ceremonial and classical music together in action-packed drama, featuring cellist Jiapeng Nie.

National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine performing Boris Lyatoshynsky's Symphony No. 2

The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine has long been one of the most distinguished European orchestras, achieving worldwide recognition through its many international tours which include Australia, the US, Europe and Asia. It has announced it will return to the UK for the first time in over 20 years next autumn - Thursday 19 October 2023 - with a rich programme of music by Richard Strauss, Bruch, Sibelius, and Ukrainian composer Borys Lyatoshynsky. Richard Strauss is most well-known for his collection of great tone poems, of which Don Juan is perhaps the most exuberant and best-loved by concert audiences. Composed in 1888, it is a work by a young man at the top of his form; a life-affirming inclusion in this programme. Bruch belongs to that small group of composers who are really only known for one work – the Violin Concerto in G minor. But what a work it is, perhaps the most performed of all violin concertos, simply – and justifiably – because it is beloved by audiences the world over for its poetic beauty, deeply moving melodies and elegant musicality. Almost all violinists include this great Concerto in their repertoire and with good reason. Boris Lyatoshynsky who died in 1968 is regarded as the father of Ukrainian contemporary music. His Second Symphony is a particularly fine work and in its dramatic accessibility is a major statement of Ukrainian national solidarity. Sibelius wrote his patriotic Finlandia in response to the Russian invasion of his own beloved country. It is therefore understandable that Ukrainian musicians identify with this work of resolute defiance. It is aptly chosen for inclusion in this programme and we look forward to the NSOU’s heartfelt performance.

Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra UK tour 2022

We're loving this - a fascinating documentary that Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra put together after its UK tour last summer (2022), shining a light on the Orchestra and tour, with some really lovely moments between members of the Orchestra! András Keller conducted a superb programme of Bartók and Beethoven, joined by acclaimed pianist Angela Hewitt for a Mozart Piano Concerto. And we are very pleased to say that both Orchestra and soloist are making return visits in our 2023-24 Zurich International Orchestra Series (though not together this time). Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra returns on 14 September 2023 to perform symphonies by Mozart and Beethoven, with Pierre-Laurent Aimard the soloist in Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 3. Angela Hewitt performs concertos by Mozart and Bach on 3 October 2023, this time with Kammerorchester Basel (who also perform Vaughan Williams' sublime Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony, the orchestration of his searing String Quartet No. 8). Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra autumn 2023 UK tour trailer

After its immensely successful debut tour of the UK in June 2022, Cadogan Hall is delighted to welcome back the Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra to open our 2023-24 Zurich International Orchestra Series. In the first half of the concert the Orchestra will be joined by the distinguished French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard in a performance of Bartók’s elegiac Third Piano Concerto, which he composed at the end of his life. In the second half, András Keller will conduct the orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony. When first performed in 1803, this epic symphonic work changed music forever. The shadow of Fascism drives Mimma, a young Italian journalist, to take refuge at her Uncle Lorenzo’s nightclub in London. Mimma forges an unassailable friendship with Sarah, an aspiring jazz singer, while her family are increasingly embroiled in resistance against Mussolini. The coming conflict brings out the best and worst in people as Mimma’s brother is captured, Londoners prepare for Hitler’s Blitz, and fears of betrayal reach fever pitch. Mimma and Sarah are caught in the turmoil as Soho is torn apart by arrests and internments. As England and Italy face their darkest hours, Mimma is in danger of losing everything.
