Follies is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Goldman. The story concerns a reunion in a crumbling Broadway theatre, scheduled for demolition, of the past performers of the "Weismann's Follies", a musical revue (based on the Ziegfeld Follies), that played in that theatre between the world wars.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" or simply "the Bard". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare remains arguably the most influential writer in the English language, and his works continue to be studied and reinterpreted
About the roundtable
Throughout the 50‑minute conversation, the actors share deeply personal reflections on when Hamlet first “appeared on their professional horizon,” often unexpectedly, and how stepping into the role impacted them.
Sir Ian McKellen offers historical context spanning decades of theatrical evolution, including influential productions, set designs, and the philosophical discoveries he made portraying numerous Hamlets both as a young man and again at 81.
The roundtable also highlights the emotional resonance of performing Hamlet on film for NT Live, bringing the work to global audiences unable to see it in person — a sentiment especially meaningful to the newest Hamlet, Hiran Abeysekera, whose family in Sri Lanka can now witness his performance.
Together, these seven artists paint a rich, multigenerational portrait of Hamlet — a role that continues to challenge, provoke, and reinvent itself with every actor who dares to ask, “To be, or not to be?”

About Gary McCann
Originating from Northern Ireland, and now based in Brighton, England, Gary McCann works internationally as both set and costume designer for opera, musicals, and theatre.
Current engagements include his highly anticipated design debut at Teatro alla Scala, Milan (Nabucco), the upcoming production of End for The National Theatre (starring Clive Owen and Saskia Reeves), and La Clemenza di Tito for Teatro La Fenice, Venice.
Recent productions include his first ballet designs for The Great Gatsby (Royal Danish Ballet, Copenhagen), the rapturously received The Merry Widow (Glyndebourne), and Fedra (Fondazione INDA) which was presented in the ancient amphitheatres of Syracuse and Pompeii.
About David Eldridge
His plays have been performed at major new writing institutions in the UK, including The Royal Court Theatre, the Bush Theatre, the Finborough Theatre and the National Theatre. His stage adaptation of the film Festen transferred from the Almeida Theatre to the West End and Broadway. His play Market Boy, informed by his childhood working on a stall at Romford Market, played at the National Theatre's largest space, the Olivier in June 2006. In July 2008 his play Under the Blue Sky was revived at the Duke of York's Theatre starring Chris O'Dowd, Catherine Tate and Francesca Annis.
In October 2017 The National Theatre presented the world premiere of his play Beginning in the Dorfman Theatre directed by Polly Findlay. Beginning transferred from The National Theatre to the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End, opening in January 2018 with both Sam Troughton and Justine Mitchell reprising their original roles. Beginning was revived for a tour starting at the Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch, in 2021. It became the first in his trilogy of plays about love and relationships for the National Theatre to be premièred in its Dorfman Theatre. The second, Middle, had its first performances rescheduled to start in April 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The final play in the trilogy, End, had its first performance at the National Theatre in 2025.

About James Corden
Is an English actor, comedian, writer, producer, singer, and television host. In the United Kingdom, he is best known for co-writing and starring in the critically acclaimed BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey. In the United States, he gained recognition as the host of The Late Late Show with James Corden, a late-night talk show that aired on CBS from 2015 to 2023.
Originally airing from 2007 to 2010, Corden co-wrote and co-starred with Welsh actress Ruth Jones in Gavin & Stacey, for which he won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy Performance. He was featured, along with grime artist Dizzee Rascal, on the UK number one single "Shout". Corden created his Carpool Karaoke sketch in 2011. He hosted the Brit Awards (2009, 2011 and 2014), the Tony Awards (2016 and 2019), and the Grammy Awards (2017 and 2018). From 2010 to 2019, he presented the panel show A League of Their Own on Sky One.
Corden has acted in films, including Gulliver's Travels (2010), Kill Your Friends (2015), and Peter Rabbit (2018) and its 2021 sequel (in which he voiced the title character). He also acted in the musical films Into the Woods (2014), Cats (2019), The Prom (2020), and Cinderella (2021).
In 2011, Corden starred in the National Theatre show One Man, Two Guvnors, which transferred from the West End to Broadway, where Corden won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. In 2015, he received the BAFTA Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year. Corden has been nominated for 29 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning 12 in total, including for The Late Late Show, Carpool Karaoke, and hosting the 70th Tony Awards. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2015 New Year Honours for services to drama.
