Roxie Nafousi shares how motherhood allowed her to be the best version of herself.
When we give birth, we’re not just welcoming our child, but also a new version of ourselves. This week’s guest on Happy Mum Happy Baby was resistant to that change at first, longing for her previous drug-fuelled nights, but then a shift occurred, and what happened was so seismic that it rippled through her entire life. I’m honoured to say that this week I am joined by Mina Holland. Her story is one that has to be listened to to be believed, and it really does take you on quite the ride. Mina knew something wasn’t quite right with her newborn daughter Vida, yet doctor’s kept dismissing her worries - she was probably an anxious mother, nothing more. Eventually when one doctor did take her seriously she was belittled and judged for not acting sooner… But that’s not the whole story here, not even part of it. Vida was eventually diagnosed with Diamond-Blackfan Anaemia Syndrome, a rare condition that meant her bone marrow was failing to produce enough red blood cells. Mina talks about navigating the diagnosis, a poorly child, and how her son ended up giving them all the greatest gift when he become a donor. This month for Midwife Monthly, we focus on a few questions about birth and recovery with Midwife Pip. A C-section scar is not just a scar - it’s about function. The best thing we can do to release tension is scar massage from around 6 weeks. Gently massage up and down in zig zags or circles and this can make such a big difference to tension and numb patches.
