Dave Willetts stars in Out There

On Golden Pond has inspired the new musical OUT THERE, which is written by Loserville's Elliot Davis and James Bourne and stars #StageFaves legend Dave Willetts. The full cast is announced for the premiere production, opening at the Union Theatre later this month...

Dave Willetts stars in the world premiere of OUT THERE, a new musical by Elliot Davis and former Busted star James Bourne, which runs at London’s new Union Theatre from 21 September to 8 October 2016, with a press night on 23 September. Full cast is announced today.

Newman Carter, a world famous astronaut mysteriously disappears in 1969. Forty years later, a troubled young man turns up on his doorstep with a letter that changes everything for everyone. OUT THERE is an original tale crossing three generations; sons, fathers and grandfathers. This heart-felt story with its country-inspired score is created by the team behind the musical Loserville.

Willetts is joined in the cast by: Luke Street as Logan Carter, Neil Moors as David Carter *, Imelda Warren-Green as Jamie Pack, Melissa Veszi as Sheriff Marti Pack, Adam Pettit as Billy, Rhys Owens as Stan, Jodee Conrad as Celia Carter, Melissa Bayern as Linda Wares, Thea Jo Wolfe as Hope Carter and Shane Gibb as Newman Carter. From 1 to 3 October, the role of David Carter will be played by Chris Howell.

OUT THERE is directed by Michael Burgen, with musical direction by Joe Louis Robinson, choreography by Lisa Mathieson, lighting by Iain Dennis, set design by Nik Corrall and costume design by Zoe Engerer. It’s produced by Sasha Regan for Union Productions.

Elliot Davis explains the inspiration for this new work:

“After writing Loserville, James and I wanted to write something different. We both love country music and at the time James was writing in Nashville which became the inspiration for the sound world in which we have set our story.

At the same time I had been inspired by the first ten minutes of Pixar’s Up and also a chance re-watching of the classic On Golden Pond. I had an idea to tell a story about a family and the circularity of dysfunction told through the male line of three generations. This, together with mine and James’ love of sci-fi, was the beginnings of the story structure for OUT THERE.

“Musicals conventionally rely on source material as a creative launching pad, but both James and I wanted to explore musical theatre as a creative medium in itself for telling original stories. Loserville, Out There and new recently showcased Busted Musical are all original tales (all of which have been showcased with Jon Bromwich and the phenomenal team at YMT:UK).

OUT THERE is a fiction. A fable. A make believe.”
