A Trivial Comedy for Serious People. Our sold-out production of The Importance of Being Earnest transfers to the West End this autumn, in a co-production with Sonia Friedman Productions. Olly Alexander (It’s A Sin) plays Algernon Moncrieff in director Max Webster‘s (Donmar’s Macbeth; Life of Pi) joyful and flamboyant reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s ‘glittering masterpiece’ (Telegraph), a hilarious story of identity, impersonation and romance. Being sensible can be excessively boring. At least Jack thinks so. While assuming the role of dutiful guardian in the country, he lets loose in town under a false identity. Meanwhile, his friend Algy takes on a similar facade. Unfortunately, living a double life has its drawbacks, especially when it comes to love. Hoping to impress two eligible ladies, the gentlemen find themselves caught in a web of lies they must carefully navigate. The Importance of Being Earnest plays at the Noël Coward Theatre for a strictly-limited run from 18 September 2025. The Next Morning | VE Day: 80th Anniversary | National Theatre

The Next Morning is a short film by Olivier Award-winning writer James Graham, commissioned to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Directed by Alice Wordsworth and produced by Emma Hall, this original film confronts the lingering echoes of war through the eyes of two generations, asking what the end of the Second World War means in a world shaped by its aftermath. Set in contemporary Britain, the film interweaves three stories of children uncovering personal reflections from the day peace was declared in Europe in 1945. As a wartime time capsule is uncovered in an allotment, a granddaughter discovers a diary in the attic, and a grandson reads an unsent letter to a father lost in the war, memories of VE Day resonate with new meaning. A new generation listens, reads, and remembers as the echoes of history come alive through diaries, keepsakes, and family stories — culminating in a new time capsule buried for the future. Combining archival footage with deeply personal monologues, the film is a celebration of remembrance, resilience, and renewal — reminding us that peace is a legacy we must choose to carry forward. The film is part of a year-long schools engagement programme responding to the events of VE and VJ Day and this significant period of the UK’s history. Starting in September 2025, the schools engagement programme for Key Stages 3 and 4 will be delivered as part of a nationwide tour of Dear England, which will take the Olivier-winning play to 16 venues across the UK.  The schools programme will encourage young people across the UK to reflect on their own place in history, with assemblies and workshops delivered in schools across England, supporting students to share the hopes and aspirations that they have for themselves and other young people 80 years’ from now. A resulting sound archive will form a 2025-2026 time capsule containing young people's voices for now, and the future. Alterations | Becoming Walker | National Theatre

'There is a thing that happens when you take great pride in how you look.' Join Arinzé Kene, Frankie Bradshaw, and the National Theatre costume makers as they explore the bold shifts in fashion that took place in the 1970s, the process of designing these costumes with practicality in mind, and tailoring the designs to suit each character, including our ambitious protagonist, Walker Holt. -- Walker Holt has big dreams for his tailor’s shop, and an even bigger order to complete. Over the course of 24 hours he must work tirelessly to satisfy his new client’s impossible tailoring needs. But as the night goes on, it’s not just the trouser hems that start to fray as tensions rise and Walker’s friendships and relationships are pushed to their limits. His success comes at a cost, but what price is he willing to pay? Lynette Linton (Blues for an Alabama Sky, Shifters) directs Michael Abbensetts’ (Sweet Talk, Empire Road) era-defining drama, with additional material by Trish Cooke, in its largest ever staging.
