Follies is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Goldman. The story concerns a reunion in a crumbling Broadway theatre, scheduled for demolition, of the past performers of the "Weismann's Follies", a musical revue (based on the Ziegfeld Follies), that played in that theatre between the world wars.
Arthur Miller’s gripping parable of power and its abuse – The Crucible is available to stream now. Raised to be seen and not heard, a group of young women suddenly find their words have a terrible power – and a witch hunt begins in Salem.

'Reader, I think you know who is most quotable.' The official trailer for Underdog: The Other Other Brontë is here. https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/productions/underdog-the-other-other-bronte/
Charlotte Brontë has a confession about how one sister became an idol, and the other became known as the third sister. You know the one. No, not that one. The other, other one… Anne.
This is not a story about well-behaved women.
This is a story about the power of words. It’s about sisters and sisterhood, love and jealousy, support and competition.
Directed by Northern Stage Artistic Director Natalie Ibu (The White Card), Sarah Gordon’s (The Edit) new play is an irreverent retelling of the life and legend of the Brontë sisters, and the story of the sibling power dynamics that shaped their uneven rise to fame.

We are delighted to be bringing back Evan Placey’s reimagined version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale, Jekyll & Hyde, for the 2024 secondary schools tour.
Our secondary schools tour brings high-quality theatre directly into priority schools. The programme introduces the art form to students and is a catalyst for drama and creativity in schools nationwide.
The production, directed by Kirsty Housley, is a mash up of Victorian England and the modern day, exploring how the repression of female voices is as prevalent in the 19th century as it is today. The story centres around two new protagonists – Hattie, Jekyll’s widow, and Flossie, a young blogger in the 21st century. With these new narratives, the audience are confronted by the power the internet holds to unleash our own inner Hydes.
With support from our partner theatres, this production will tour to 12 Theatre Nation Partnership areas, reaching approximately 10,000 students across England.

Meet the initial West End cast of multi-award winning musical, Standing at the Sky's Edge.
Hailed as ‘the most exciting new British musical in years’ (WhatsOnStage), Standing at the Sky’s Edge was originally written as a love letter to Sheffield, charting the hopes and dreams of three generations over the course of six tumultuous decades, navigating universal themes of love, loss and survival.
Directed by Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director Robert Hastie, with irresistible songs of legendary singer-songwriter Richard Hawley and a beautiful, hilarious and gut-wrenching book by Chris Bush, Standing at the Sky’s Edge reveals the history of modern Britain through the stories of the landmark housing estate – a heartfelt exploration of the power of community and what it is we all call home.

It begins like this. With the dusk and the storm and the Thames…
A storm rages and, in the darkest part of the night, a body is pulled from the swirling Thames.
Across the city, two young women confront an uncertain future. In Limehouse, Lizzie Hexam struggles to break free of the river and its dark secrets. On the other side of town, Bella Wilfer mourns a lost marriage. The appearance of the mysterious John Rokesmith has the potential to change their lives for ever. Will they sink or swim?
This romantic and propulsive thriller is a hymn to the city and the river that runs through it. Directed by Ian Rickson (Translations) and adapted by Ben Power (The Lehman Trilogy), with original songs throughout, the genius of Dickens meets the fierce musical imagination of acclaimed singer-songwriter, PJ Harvey.

Nathuram Godse: journalist, nationalist – and the man who murdered Gandhi.
This gripping play traces Godse’s life over 30 years during India’s fight for independence: from a devout follower of Gandhi, through to his radicalisation and their tragic final encounter in Delhi in 1948.
Director Indhu Rubasingham (Kerry Jackson, The Great Wave) reunites with Anupama Chandrasekhar, one of India’s most exciting playwrights, for this essential exploration of oppression and extremism, featuring Olivier Award-winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) as Nathuram Godse with Paul Bazely (Cruella) as Mahatma Gandhi.
Playing in the Olivier Theatre until 14 October.

A musical adventure
Everything you know about witches is wrong. Forget the pointy hats and broomsticks: they’re the most dangerous creatures on earth.
And now they’ve come up with their most evil plan yet.
The only thing standing in their way is Luke and his Gran. But he’s ten and she’s got a dodgy heart. Time is short, danger is everywhere, and they’ve got just one chance to stop the witches from squalloping every stinking little child in England.
The Witches is a rip-roaring musical version of Roald Dahl’s timeless tale, filled with wit, daring and heart. With book and lyrics by Olivier Award-winner Lucy Kirkwood, music and lyrics by Tony Award-nominee Dave Malloy, and directed by Lyndsey Turner.

Olivier Award-winning writer Chris Bush and director Emily Lim talk about The Odyssey. To mark the fifth anniversary of Public Acts, The Odyssey is reimagined for today in an epic retelling with hundreds of community members across the country. https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/productions/the-odyssey/
Episode 5: The Underworld plays on the Olivier Stage at the National Theatre 26 — 28 August 2023.
--
Held captive by the nymph Calypso, Odysseus has all but given up hope of ever returning home. Back on Ithaca, her son Telemachus plots a rescue, and high above on Mount Olympus, the Gods convene to set her one final trial – a voyage to Hades, land of the dead.
But high above on Mount Olympus, the Gods are convening to decide the fate of Odysseus, and if she should be allowed to return home to Ithaca.
The Gods agree to release Odysseus, but first she must pass through Hades, the land of the dead, to finally reach home.
--
This national, multi-venue production is told over five parts, with each episode of Odysseus’ journey created and performed by local artists and communities from four partner organisations: Restoke in Stoke-on-Trent, Cast in Doncaster, Trowbridge Town Hall in Trowbridge and The Fire Station (for Sunderland Culture in partnership with Sunderland Empire)in Sunderland.
The final part of Odysseus’ epic journey, The Underworld, culminates in a full-scale musical production on the Olivier stage at the National Theatre, bringing together community performers from all four partner organisations, and members recruited through Public Acts founding community partners in London, founding theatre partner Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, and Trybe House Theatre in London.

Hear from the creative team and actors behind Grenfell: in the words of survivors on honouring the voices of survivors and bereaved onstage. https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/productions/grenfell-in-the-words-of-survivors/
----
★★★★★ 'a masterpiece of forensic fury' Guardian
★★★★★ 'tour de force' Time Out
★★★★★ 'gives centre stage to the survivors' Broadway World
'It was my safest place. It was home’
Grenfell: in the words of survivors is a powerful new verbatim play from the testimony of residents at the heart of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
Six years on, interviews conducted with a group of survivors and bereaved reveal the impact of the multiple failures that led to a national disaster, asking: how do we stop this ever happening again?
Created from these interviews by Gillian Slovo (Another World: Losing our Children to Islamic State), the play is co-directed by Phyllida Lloyd (The Donmar Shakespeare Trilogy) and Anthony Simpson-Pike (The P Word).
Startling and deeply moving, it explores the courage and resilience of an ill-treated community and their continued campaign for justice.
Grenfell: in the words of survivors is part of a multi-year programme of National Theatre creative activity in North Kensington, delivered in collaboration with local community organisations.

In our latest addition to National Theatre at Home, Zadie Smith transports Chaucer’s The Wife of Bath to 21st Century North West London, directed by Kiln Theatre Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingh. https://www.ntathome.com/the-wife-of-willesden
A proper local legend. Married five times. Mother. Lover. Aunt. Friend. Alvita will tell her life story to anyone in the pub – there’s no shame in her game. The question is: are you ready to hear it? Because this woman’s got the gift of the gab: she can rewrite mistakes into triumphs, turn pain into parables, and her love life’s an epic poem. They call her The Wife of Willesden…
A play that celebrates the human knack for telling elaborate tales, especially about our own lives.

Step into the National Theatre Archive and discover the stories behind our 1999 production of The Oresteia, the world's earliest dramatic masterpiece, and the practicalities of staging an ancient Greek play in a modern theatre building.
This trilogy by Aeschylus was presented in a new version by Ted Hughes and directed by Katie Mitchell. Other creatives involved with The Oresteia were: design by Vicki Mortimer, music by Melissa Holding and Joe Townsend, movement by Struan Leslie and lighting by Nigel J. Edwards.
In this second film about Katie Mitchell’s The Oresteia (1999) we look at how the play changed over the course of its run at the National Theatre and how the Feminist politics of this particular production shaped its dramatic impact.

For background detail on Greek theatre productions at the National theatre, see our online exhibit: https://artsandculture.google.com/sto...
The film features Dr Lucy Jackson, Assistant Professor in ancient Greek literature at Durham University and Erin Lee, Head of Archive at the National Theatre, London.

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Following a box-office record-breaking run in cinemas in 2019, the one-woman show returns to cinemas to the big screen this summer.
Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.
The hilarious, award-winning play that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series Fleabag, was captured live on stage from London’s West End in 2019.
Presented by DryWrite, Soho Theatre and Annapurna Theatre.
